Nosotros

Newark's Home for Spanish Culture Since 1964

Founded in March 1964, Club España has proudly preserved Spanish culture, language, music, dance, food, and traditions in Newark for more than six decades, bringing together generations of Spanish families and their descendants. According to the club's own historical research, our roots go back to around 1895, to a Hispanic association in Newark that later helped Spanish refugees after the Spanish Civil War. Among our known founding members are José Iglesias, Joe Abeijón, and Adelino Vázquez Sr.

Since 1970, our home has been 180 New York Avenue, the former St. George's Hall, which still keeps original historic details. For decades the club welcomed new Spanish immigrants, helped families settle in, and brought the community together with Sunday dances, dinners, and celebrations.

Club España represents every region of Spain. Our traditional dance group Anduriña and our gaita and Galician music group Alborada carry those traditions forward, and the club hosts the ALCE Spanish language program and more than sixty young dancers. In 2004, members of Anduriña and Alborada performed at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, and the Xunta de Galicia has invited the club several times for cultural exchanges and performances.

Today we're also Newark's go-to spot for Spanish fútbol. We show every LaLiga match, the Champions League, international soccer, and every game of La Roja, the Spanish national team. Come for the match, stay for the tapas.
